The Priesthood a day to remember

Chad received the priesthood on January 1, 2012. It is kind of cool to be 12 in 2012. I don't think he will have problems remembering when it happened. Not only was it a crazy day but a great weekend.

I think our ward was trying to fit it every Priesthood ordinance in one day. A baby was blessed, someone was confirmed and received the Holy Ghost, Chad was presented to the congregation for the priesthood, and the big one - we got a new bishopric. It was 5 years to the day that the old bishopric was called on December 31, 2006 and on January 1, 2012 they called our new bishop.

Chad was not too thrilled to put his tie back on.

Gotta love these guys.

It was a crazy weekend. Chad's birthday was on Friday. On Saturday, Granny and Grandpa came and spent New Year's Eve with us. We have lots of yummy food, we played some great games, and had fun with the family. The highlight was playing hide and seek in the dark. Poor Austin got the skin scared off his hide more than once. We watched the ball drop, commented on the weird singers, and played one more round of hide and seek in the dark then headed to bed. It was the one and only time I am thankful that our new church time was 1:00 p.m. The holidays were sure full but we had a great time.

The Temple

While we were in Canada Becky made arrangements for us all to go do baptisms because Alyssa had been working hard getting names ready for the temple. Chad was sad because he was not able to go but next time he will be ready.

It was a great experience as temple work always is. One of the boys was lucky to do baptize George Lucas. Keston was the proxy for the confirmation and he asked in George Lucas had died. While one George did but not the Star Wars guru. It was some great experiences. Becky's sister did some baptisms and Tracy's mom had never done baptisms so it was her first experience which made it really special.

Tylissa is now working on some names so the next trip up we will be ready and Chad will be there.

My baby is 12 . . .

Chad's birthday is right after Christmas and this year was the big one. We didn't get to see much of the Austin during the holidays and by some magical luck they let Austin come home with us for a whole week . . . what was I thinking but the boys had a great time.

Austin gave Chad one of the Hex bug thingies.

Chad and his new ties. Unfortunately they are a bit big but hopefully he will grow because ties are very important when you get the Priesthood.

Remote control helicopter - watch out, Maggie doesn't like it and if it crashes she will be there to drag it off.

The yummy banana cream pie that we remembered to dig into at 11:00 that night. We had a great night. We had Chad's favorite birthday dinner - chilli cheese dogs and then we headed to the bowling alley. It was cosmic bowling night so we didn't get pictures but we sure had fun. We all did great both rounds. Tylissa needs to learn how to bowl with her fingers in the holes. Austin taught us how to gangsta bowl - we were cracking up each time he had a turn. I almost one the second round but Val just can't let me win anything.

Christmas

We were very lucky to have the trusty watch dog guarding the Christmas stockings. So grateful Granny is prepared when I forgot our stockings at home.

Good Morning! It is a good thing Great Grandma Berry called at 645 so we knew when to wake up. She must not remember how teenagers like to sleep.

Opening up the stockings.

We couldn't resist this is the cutest vest but Maggie doesn't agree. She will not move when we put it on her. It is a good thing she has her own thick coat to keep her warm.

We must have been really good, Santa found us.

Val got a new scripture case.

What could it be, what could it be.

It's a pink ripstick. Now to wait 8 months for the snow to melt.

Tylissa's new color scheme for her bedroom. Hopefully we will get it all done before she goes away to college.

The kendama - full of fun and hours of entertainment. Remember to spell it right when googling - you never know what will come up, just ask Chad.

Keston got one too.

I love this girl!

Granny sulking on because Grandpa got a wonderful calendar for Christmas and she didn't get one. We'll see who wins the battle of where the calendar will hang. Grandpa thinks it will look great up in the shop.

Dad on Christmas morning.

We had a wonderful Christmas. After Grandma Berry's wake up call we opened gifts, played a little, ate breakfast and then headed to church. It was a wonderful Christmas service, full of music and the spirit was there. It was definitely the perfect ending to the perfect morning.

Christmas Eve - Doig Style

Christmas Eve is the best night ever when you are at Granny's and Grandpa Paul's. They know how to do it right and everyone has a fantastic time. The evening starts with a delicious Christmas dinner.

If you can't read the apron it says . . . Granny's the next best thing to Santa Claus - and we all agree.

A few of the crowd members await in anticipation. It was starting to look and smell really good.

Austin showing off an old tradition of the Doig family. Crackers to start off the meal. They have little surprises inside. The four boys all sat at a table all to themselves.

The girls and Paul, trying to sneak in the picture, at the single table. Val and I had to be the chaperones for this group - including Grandma Berry.

See what we had to keep under control!

Keston wouldn't take a picture with me . . . I'm not sure why . . . I'm a fun mom.

Keston in his crown from the crackers . . . we all thought he looked like Jughead from the Archie comics.

After dinner was all cleaned up in was on to the Nativity.

Chad was the donkey, the very brave Sarah was Mary, and Brian was Joseph. Sarah is Becky's sister and we were so lucky to have them join our party. Becky's parents also came from Eastern Canada to enjoy Christmas with them.

Mary and Joseph asking Nathan the Inn Keeper if there was room in the Inn. Sadly there is never room in the Inn and they move to the stables where Jesus is born.

The angel Keston, tells the glad tidings of Jesus' birth to the shepherds Tylissa and Kaylene while they are watching their sheep, Maggie. They go and worship baby Jesus in the stable.

The Wisemen come from the East as they follow the star. I love that Preston is standing on Austin's robe. Paul was the 3rd of the great men. Preston was so enthusiastic as he sang, he was very excited to find baby Jesus.

The whole cast with Alyssa as the narrator.

Grandpa always adds his special touch to the evening with a story or something special to help remind us what the season is all about. He wrapped wood etchings of special words that the go along with the season, testimony, son, service, faith, and sacrifice.

We waited a few minutes for Ken and Tracy to arrive before we started the pinata. They went to Calgary to pick up Tracy's mom so she could enjoy the holidays with them. The elders also joined in the festivities but they didn't break the pinata and couldn't stay long.

When the costumes are all put away the kids - small and not-so-small - gather round to see who will be the lucky one to break the pinata and what did Granny put inside this year. Unfortunately Maggie went berserk when the kids were hitting it and since Val was 1/2 of the brave souls to hold it, I didn't get very many pictures but here is Chad ready to give it a go.

Keston takes a turn.

Tylissa put all her muscle into it.

The champion of the night was Preston - he broke the pinata (not in this picture but it was great). The pinata was full of yummy treats and Wasa towels imported all the way from Hawaii. We won't be looking for extra towels when we hit the beach next summer.

The evening still wasn't over - next up is the cousin exchange. The cousins all draw names and are very excited to present their cousin with the gift they picked out for them. Everyone sits in a circle and it starts out youngest to oldest. Even the too-cool-for-school teenagers get into the spirit of the gift exchange.

Chad opening his gift from Kaylene.

Mark even likes the gift exchange.

More of the cousin gifts.

Alyssa opening her gift from Tylissa (and great input from Aunt Sherylee).

It looks like everyone is spoiled rotten. Keston got the game Quelf, Tylissa got Mike n Ikes and fun socks, and Chad got a basketball hoop.

This winds down the evening and soon everyone ventures to their own homes to wait for the magical night. We missed Aunt Sherylee and Uncle Monte this year. They did come up after Christmas but we didn't get to see them - we really need to coordinate the visits together because we really miss them.

The 2nd Annual White Elephants Gift Exchange

Because the holidays were so busy we decided to roll in the Hemsley/Toren 2nd Annual White Elephant gift exchange in with the Survivor finale and crepes. The finale was ok, the crepes were delicious and the gift exchange was delightful.

M went and picked the biggest box - always a temptation. Inside Chad had hidden the football helmet underneath a lot of paper. She was so funny after digging through the box she found the helmet and her exact words . . . " a football helmet, I am not happy" so then she sat in the box.

B picked a bag with a mug and hot chocolate and it was grabbed up so she ended up with a sparkly pink purse.

Keston with hot hands and a wonderful Billy Ocean cd . . . he actually listened to it and put some songs on his iPod - do you remember Caribbean Queen?

Other fun gifts - an elephant book, a mixed tape, chocolate bars . . . the kids didn't know what the tape was - seriously - we can't be that old yet!

The temptation was too great - DT had to try on the helmet.

Christmas Concerts

The Christmas season started out with Tylissa's orchestra concert. She was right behind the conductor when she stands on her podium so you see her and then you don't. The video is below.

Keston getting ready to play the flute. He looked very handsome in his tux. Sorry I didn't get a video clip of him.

The grade nine band playing a Christmas tune.

Chad singing with a classmate. He was very proud of this piece. I keep reminding him that his voice will change.
